The Royal Castle Archive

The Royal Castle Archive is since 1964 a depot for the National Archive but also a part of the Royal court. the Archive is open one day in the week for the public.

The Royal Castle Archive is handling the Royal Court and the Royal Castles archives. It was opned in 1893 due to need for larger and better archive storage. What you can find in the Royal Castle Archive is:

  • The Archive of the The Royal Collections Department
  • The Archive of the Royal Armoury
  • The Archive of the Royal Mews Department
  • The Archive of the Office of the Marshal of the Realm
  • The Archive of the Royal Djurgården Administration
  • The Archive of the Office of the Marshal of the Court
  • Archives of Royal foundations
  • The Archive of the Office of the Royal Governor of the Royal Palaces

The Royal Archives from the time before the year 1800 is not in the Royal Castle Archive but in the National Archive. The Royal Families private archives are neither in the Royal Castle Archive but in Ulriksdal Castle and are not open to the public.

The Royal Archive

In the Royal Castle Archive there are documents concerning the Royal Court and
the Royal Castles since the 16:th century. It was King Gustav Vasa who
started to save documents for the future and thereby created the need
for a archive.
